Upper Mustang Trekking led by expert guide and staff of Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition towards an overwhelming adventure around beautiful landscapes with colorful hills and cliffs of red earth which makes this country Upper Mustang one of the most photogenic place in Himalayan region.

Starting this fabulous journey to Upper Mustang Trekking from picturesque touristic Pokhara valley where the Annapurna Himalaya reflects on its serene Phewa and Begnas Lakes, taking a short scenic flight with alluring views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiris and massive range of Annapurna Himalaya with majestic Machapuchare ‘Fish Tail’ peak.

On reaching at Jomsom at 2,716 meters high a headquarter and main town of Mustang region, where this amazing adventure to Upper Mustang Trekking begins through Kaligandaki river valley passing interesting villages of Kagbeni, Chele (Tsele) Chusang (Tsusang) and Charang (Tsarang)  with high passes of Yamda-la 3,860 m and Lo-La 3,950 m and then reaching the Fort Walled village of Lo-Manthang, once a forbidden kingdom where kings and queen still exists.

It became an independent kingdom in its own right, under the rule of Ame Pal, the founder king of Lo in 1,380 A.D. The present royal family can trace its history 25 generations back to Ame Pal, and the city of Lo Manthang.

Trek leads back at Jomsom where this awesome adventure Upper Mustang ends at Jomsom with a flight back to Kathmandu via Pokhara.

Day 04: Morning fly to Jomsom 2,715 and trek to Kagbeni 2,858 m – 04 hrs.

Day 05: Trek to Chele / Tsele 3,050m – 06 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Syangbochen (3,475m) – 05 hrs.

Day 07: Trek to Ghaymi (3,520m) – 06 hrs.

Day 08: Trek to Charang / Tsarang (3,500m) – 05 hrs.

Day 09: Trek to Lo-Manthang (3,700m) – 05 hrs.

Day 10: At Lo – Manthang for local exploration and excursion.

Day 11: Trek to Drakmar (3810m) – 05 hrs.

Day 12: Trek to Ghiling (3,806m) – 06 hrs.

Day 13: Trek to Chhuksang / Tsusang (3,050m) – 05 hrs.

Day 14: Trek to Jomsom 2, 715 m – 04 hours.

Day 15: Fly to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.

Day 16: Drive back to Kathmandu – 06 hrs.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu via respective airlines.
On arrival at Kathmandu international airport terminal Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition staff and guide will receive you with a warm welcome and then transfer to respective hotels in the hub of Kathmandu around the interesting area of Thamel. After refreshment our guide / leader will brief with information regarding hotels, Nepali culture, tours and Upper Mustang Trekking with a welcome dinner in a typical Nepalese restaurant with folk cultural program.

Day 02 : Preparation day in Kathmandu
We separate this day for the preparation of the entire journey. You will be informed of all the trekking plans and the packing lists, what you can expect and how it can be more interesting. This day can be important to most of the people before beginning the journey. Sightseeing tour in Kathmandu is optional when if intended, you can visit a number of world heritage listed places .

Day 03 : Drive to Pokhara 860m (220 km) – 06 hrs.
Early morning an interesting scenic drive for about 06 hours to popular tourist city at Pokhara on the main busy highway, the drive carry’s on with fantastic vista of snowcapped mountains of Mt. Annapurna-Manaslu and Mt. Dhaulagiri with the famous beautiful peak of Machapuchare the Fish Tail shaped mountain which is unclimbed so far and well respected and regarded as sacred mountain in its natural structure, at Pokhara transfer to respective hotels by the serene Phewa lake. (If it’s a flying option a sweeping scenic flight of 30 minutes to Pokhara on arrival our staff will transfer you to respective hotels by the Phewa Lake side with afternoon at leisure).

Day 04 : Morning fly to Jomsom 2,715 and trek to Kagbeni 2,858m – 04 hrs.
From Pokhara, taking a morning short scenic flight to Jomsom, an awesome view of mountains during 22 minutes on air, at Jomsom headquarter town of Mustang region, famous for apple orchards and the products. From Jomsom our adventure starts toward upper Mustang area, as the walk follows River Kaligandaki upstream on the wide river valley leading to Kagbeni through Ekle Bhatti 2,740 m. Ekle bhatti located on route Jomsom, Muktinath and Upper Mustang, from here heading towards North West to Kagbeni village for overnight stop in a nice lodge, Kagbeni village the gateway to Upper Mustang.

Day 05 : Trek to Chele / Tsele 3,050m – 06 hrs.
After a wonderful overnight at Kagbeni village, heading towards Upper Mustang area on the old Trans-Himalayan Caravan route to Nepal / Tibet, morning walk follows Kali Gandaki River upstream leading to nice cultivated terraced farm fields to reach at Tirigaon village with amazing view of natural erosion landscapes and high red cliff, canyon as the trek continues to Chele. On route Chele passing pilgrims in search of a fossil or ammonite known as ‘Salagram Silas’ which are found in abundant in Kali Gandaki River valley, regarded as holy or scared stones by Hindus and worshiped as an iconic representation of supreme Lord Vishnu (one of the three main Hindu Gods). Walk continues for few hours through Tangbe, Tsusang (Chusang) villages and then ending the good walk on crossing a small bridge to Chele / Tsele through broken canyons and ruin castle walls with surrounding cliffs, across the river are spectacular eroded red cliffs. After crossing the small bridge an uphill walk for 45 minutes brings you to Chele village for overnight stop.

Day 06 : Trek to Syangbochen (3,475m) – 05 hrs.
Morning walk from Chele village gets steeper for an hour onto a ridge at 3,130m, from here one can get a grand views of Gyagar across a huge canyon. Trek continues with a slow climb on the windswept terrain till the pass is reached at 3,540m. From here a gradual descent leads to Samar, after a short climb above Samar village to a ridge, with a downhill leading to a large gorge past a chortens painted red, black, yellow and white-all the colors are made from local rocks. The journey continues into another valley with juniper trees, on crossing a stream walk follows uphill path to a ridge at 3,800m, the trail climbs over to another pass, from here our trail descends to Syangbochen for overnight stop, a small settlement with few tea shops at 3,710m.

Day 07 : Trek to Ghaymi (3,520m) – 06 hrs.
From Syangbochen our route climbs gradually through the fields up the centre of the valley, passing below the Tama Gung settlements, the walk continues a long climb across the head of the valley to the Nyi La pass 3,950m, the highest point of this trek. The pass itself happens to be the southern boundary of Lo. From here a gradual descend for half hour brings to junction; the right path leads direct to Tsarang while the left leads to Ghami village out overnight stop and one of the main major village of Lo region.

Day 08 : Trek to Charang / Tsarang (3,500m) – 05 hrs.
After a nice overnight at Ghaymi, trek continues to a gentle climb reaching a pass at 3,770m entering towards a huge valley, from here taking the right downhill path towards Geling with its large fields of barley on the outskirt of the village. Walk drops below the blue, grey and red cliffs across the valley to a steel bridge across the Tangmarchu River, the path climbs past to the long and magnificent stretch of Mani wall, probably the longest one in Nepal. From here the final climb of the day brings to a 3,600m pass, after the last pass a gentle descent leads to the overnight stop at Charang, a lovely and interesting village with row of maze of fields, willow trees and huge five storey white Dzong and a Red Gompa located on the edge of Kali Gandaki gorge, Tsarang with its own electricity system.

Day 09 : Trek to Lo-Manthang (3,700m) – 05 hrs.
Today walk leads to our main destination at Lo-Manthang, morning starts with a short descend crossing Charang-chu River and then a steep uphill to a ridge through Tholung valley. Our route diverts north with gradual climb as the valley ascends to a large chortens, which marks the border between Charang (Tsarang) and Lo, climb leads to a stream, then reaching a wide windswept landscape on a ridge at 3,850m with grand view of walled village of Lo-Mananthang. A short downhill walk leads to a stream that outlines Lo-Manthang village, from here a short climb on a plateau leading to the southern wall of our destination at Lo-Manthang. The only entrance to the village is from north-east gate, so taking a circumbulation around the wall to reach the main entrance gate.

Day 10 : At Lo – Manthang for local exploration and excursion.
At Lo-Manthang with free day, for leisure walk and acclimatization and to explore around its interesting historical and cultural places of Lo-Manthang, there are four major monasteries / Gompas around Lo-Manthang including Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), the Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the great Entrance Hall. These are the main attractions of Lo-Manthang and charges entry fees to visit these places. Palace tour of late King Jigme is worth a visit if it opens for outsiders.

Day 11 : Trek to Drakmar (3810m) – 05 hrs.
After an amazing time around Lo-Manthang, morning walk leads back on the same route for few hours with gradual walk up to Marang village, from here turning right towards west using the an old path to reach the overnight stop at Dhakmar village, around this area afternoon time is very windy with dust so starting early in the morning is highly suggested.

Day 12 : Trek to Ghiling (3,806m) – 06 hrs.
On leaving Dhakmar, walk follows passes a longest and spectacular series of Mani walls (Sacred-Holy prayer stone wall which is built by locals and Buddhist pilgrims) and then crossing a bridge over Ghami Khola reaching at Ghami village, from here walk for couple of hours heading towards south reaching at Ghiling for overnight stop with time to visit Geling monastery and water rotated prayer wheel.

Day 13 : Trek to Chhuksang / Tsusang (3,050m) – 05 hrs.
Morning walk starts with a gradual climb upto Syangboche village, then towards a small pass of Yamda La at 3,860 m with superb views of snow capped peaks and of Mustang vast landscapes, from here downhill walk through small villages of Bhena and Samar. Walk follows a stream leading all the way to Tsugsang village for overnight stop via Gyakar and Chele villages.

Day 14 : Trek to Jomsom 2, 715 m – 04 hours.
After Tsusang rest of the walk is much easier on moderate trails all the way, with drop of 1,200m downhill to Kaligandaki River valley, today’s nice walk reaches vast Kaligandaki River plain and then with small stops at Kagbeni and Ekale bhatti back to Jomsom town located on a junction of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri circuit, and Upper Mustang including holy Muktinath route, afternoon free with time to explore around Jomsom.

Day 15 : Fly to Pokhara and transfer to hotel.
Morning walk to Jomsom small airport for short sweeping and scenic flight to picturesque Pokhara valley, Pokhara with massive Annapurna mountain views with serene Phewa Lake.

Day 16 : Drive back to Kathmandu – 06 hrs.
Morning a scenic drive back to Kathmandu, after a wonderful trip to Upper Mustang trekking, on reaching Kathmandu transfer to respective hotels with afternoon free at leisure for relaxation and shopping souvenirs. (Flying options as per the flight time our staff transfer you to Pokhara domestic airport for 30 minutes scenic flight to Kathmandu)

Day 17 : International departure for homeward bound.
Your last day in amazing Nepal as per international flight time our staff will transfer you to international airport for your flight back home or to next port of call, after a great and remarkable adventure around Upper Mustang Trekking with grand and wonderful service of Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition its guides and staff.
