Upper Dolpo and Shey Gompa Trekking a fascinating journey a combination of Lower and Upper Dolpo where one can marvel the beautiful scenery of landscapes forest of blue pines, rhododendron and fir tree lines visiting the turquoise Phokshumdo Lake before heading higher country to Shey Gompa crossing over the highest point of this adventure at Kang-La 5,360 meters with fabulous views of mountains and of Dolpo rolling hills and valley.

Starting with super flight to Nepalgunj and then with another scenic flight to reach at Dolpo region, where this adventure starts with a visit of picturesque Phoksundo Lake with Ringmo village and then heading to Shey Gompa the crystal monastery a mystical place one of the last remaining and hidden Shangri-la.

Return journey leads back to Jhupal after visiting interesting villages of Saldang, Yangze Gompa, Tokyu Gaon, Tarakot and Dunai after crossing Saldan-la and Jeng-la high passes for the flight back to Kathmandu after a most amazing and incredible experience around Upper Dolpo and Shey Gompa with Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Day 02: Morning sightseeing tour afternoon fly to Nepalgunj.

Day 03: Fly to Jhupal 2,320 m then trek to Dunai 2,850m – 03 hrs.

Day 04: Trek to Ankhe 2,896m – 06 hrs.

Day 05: Trek to Sumdu / Sulighat village 3,500m -06 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,500 m – 05 hours.

Day 07: Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.

Day 08: Trek to Phoksundo -Khola 3,640 m- 05 hrs.

Day 23: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.

Day 24: In Kathmandu free day with sightseeing tour.

Day 25: International departure for home ward bound.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
At Kathmandu Tribhuvan international airport received by Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition staff for transfer to respective hotels, after refreshment our guide will brief regarding hotel, Kathmandu and Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa.

Day 02 : Morning sightseeing tour afternoon fly to Nepalgunj.
Morning our city guide will receive you for a tour around Kathmandu visiting places of interest. Kathmandu Valley is renowned steeped with World Heritage Sites the holy Pashupatinath temple, Bouddhanath( Little Tibet), Swayambhunath ( Monkey Temple) & monasteries, ancient Kings Palaces and courtyard in Kathmandu; after an interesting sightseeing tour return back to hotel. Afternoon depart for Lower Dolpo trek, a scenic flight of 50 mins to Nepalgunj, located close to India border then transfer to respective hotels for overnight stop.

Day 03 : Fly to Jhupal 2,320 m then trek to Dunai 2,850m – 03 hrs.
After early breakfast transfer to Nepalgunj airport for a short flight to Jhupal in Dolpo, on reaching Dolpo meet our trekking staff and trek to Dunai for overnight stop, walk leads through interesting farm villages and farm lands with views of snow capped peaks in the distance in Jhupal in the comfort of nice lodge.

Day 04 : Trek to Ankhe 2,896m – 06 hrs.
After an interesting time in Dunai, walk leads through the market and then crossing the bridge over Thulo Bheri River and then a climb towards a ridge of Phoksundo River valley with super views of Kagmara peak, from here trekking leads to a descend passing several spread out houses with walnut trees close to a stream to reach at Dhera a small cattle herders settlements, a short climb brings to Rahagaon village of Thakuri, a Hindu people, then taking a downhill path into thick forest, reaching our first overnight camp at Ankhe, a small village and the entrance to Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Day 05 : Trek to Sumdu / Sulighat village 3,500m -06 hrs.
From Ankhe morning walk leads to short ascend and descend through forest to reach a river bank, and then climb to a ridge on leaving the forest high above the river, from the top walk downhill leading upstream to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village, and then heading further to Sumdu near Sulighat village for overnight camp.

Day 06 : Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,500 m – 05 hours.
Morning walk leads into a Phoksundo and Pungmo Khola (stream) valley to cross west bank of Phoksundo Khola following Pungmo Khola, from here walking downhill into pine and birch tree lines to reach at upper side of the river / stream, after a pleasant stop continue walk to reach Ringmo village, an interesting, attractive Tibetan style village with mud plastered chortens and Mani (prayer) walls, from here a short distance walk to Phoksundo Lake for overnight camp by the shore of emerald Phoksundo Lake.

Day 07 : Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.
A perfect place for free and rest day, just relax and marvel the beautiful views of peaks and landscapes and explore interesting Ringmo village.

Day 08 : Trek to Phoksundo -Khola 3,640 m- 05 hrs.
From this lovely place morning walk starts to higher area of upper Dolpo region to our another highlight and final destination of this awesome journey walk follows to contour around rocky ledge over the river bank on the unsteady path, then approaching at the western side the lake through a summer pasture which opens into a wide plain of Phoksundo Khola for the overnight camp by the river shore.

Day 09 : Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang – 07 hrs.
After a nice walk of previous day, today’s morning trek begins on a good path leading northern area of Phoksundo Khola and then walking up on the hill slopes, after a steep uphill to reach at a ridge top with impressive scenery of wide green valley and looking over Kang-La pass that leads to Shey Gompa, setting the camp for the night stop on this nice green summer pasture.

Day 10 : Trek to Shey Gompa 4,500m via Kang-La 5,360m -06 hrs.
Morning walk starts to our main destination at Shey Gompa which is another high lights of this trip after Phoksundo Lake, trek continues with a strenuous climb on stone and rocky trail to reach at Kang-la pass at 5,360 meters, the highest point of this great adventure, the top offers superb views of surrounding landscapes of distant snow clad peaks including massive range of Mt. Dhaulagiri. From the top descend to the bottom of the pass on the valley, the trail leads by the river side, and then trekking on wet grounds coming across yaks, sheep’s, and goats around this cattle herders camps, after a nice stop walk continues heading towards Buddhist prayer monument known as Chorten and Mani and slowly reaching our final destination at Shey Gompa, located at the base of majestic Crystal Mountain regarded as holy mountain with an old monastery nearby.

Day 11 : Rest day at Shey Gompa the crystal monastery.
A free and rest day after a continues walk for a week, this is a perfect place for rest day in this high mountainous region, in the harmony of nature and with the prayer chant of the monks, visit the Shey Monastery also known as Crystal Monastery, this area is well described in the novel Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen.

Day 12 : Trek to Namduna Gaon 4,800m via Saldang La 5,200m.
From this wonderful place, our journey continuous with a descend into a wall of canyon, then the trail meanders atop Saldang-la, offering great vista of surrounding beautiful landscapes and of Mt. Dhaulagiri peaks, then heading downhill on the grazing area with pleasant walk to Namduna Gaon for overnight, a traditional village with nice cultivated vegetable garden with an old Tibetan Buddhism monastery.

Day 13 : Trek to Saldang 3,620m -05 hours.
After a nice and peaceful stop in this pleasant village walk leads, on the dusty arid and windswept terrain, the walk leading to steep uphill to reach the overnight camp at Saldang, this is another impressive and large village of this region, situated higher side of the plateau.

Day 14 : Trek to Yangze Gomba 4,960m – 05 hrs.
From this interesting large village, morning walk continues following the river Nang chu all the way on this arid and barren country then the walk leads with short ups and down and passing Tiling and Lurigaon which is a cattle herders shelter and grazing place and then heading to the overnight camp at Yangze village with an old Gomba a pre Buddhist religion called Bon-Pa.

Day 15 : Trek to Sibu 4,560m – 07 hrs.
This morning walk leads back on the same path to reach the main route near Saldang village, the taking North West direction to Sibu and further, after re-crossing the same trail following a river through farm fields, and then walk into Namdo village another nice and large village of Dolpo area with an old monastery, from here after a visit in the monastery walk leads to pasture land at Sibu for overnight camp.

Day 16 : Trek to Jeng-la phedi 4,900m -06 hrs.
After nice stop in this summer pasture area walk leads to follow Nam Khong Khola a stream for short while, and then encountering yaks and mules laden caravan and merchants towards Tibetan frontier, this trade with Tibet been going since hundreds of years, and this walking route lies on the old Trans Himalayan Trade Route.

Day 17 : Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,200m via Jeng la 5,090m – 06 hrs.
After days in isolation away from villages, today’s walk leads to an interesting village at Tokyu Gaon one of the largest village of this region, morning starts with a steep climb for two hours to the top of Jeng-la with grand views of snow capped mountains with Mt. Dhaulagiri North Face, on enjoying the fantastic views, then descend towards Tarap valley, which is one of the longest beautiful green valley extending about 20 k.m along Tarap Chu River, with more than 10 villages with well tended farm fields, monasteries and chortens. Overnight stop at Tokyugaon, an interesting village with old monastery, afternoon visit the monastery or just relax and observe the local with farming activities.

Day 18 : Trek to Dho Tarap 4,040m – 05 hrs.
Morning walk follows downhill path towards Tarap Chu into a wide valley, with temporary settlements of local cattle herders, the people here belongs to both Bon Pa and Chaiba sects of Tibetan Buddhism (Mahayana) living together in harmony. After a nice walk on this beautiful valley reaching at Dho Tarap for overnight camp, afternoon with time for local visit around village inhabited by Tibetans origin people and Magar hill tribe.

Day 19 : Trek to Tarap Khola (Kamekharka) 3,800m – 07 hrs.
A long day walk with moderate trail with few short up and down hills, morning starts with a descent into a wide valley which further narrows into a gorge. Following the path with sparse vegetation of juniper and wild rose bushes which is typical in this dry barren area of inner Himalaya climate and arctic temperate zone, around this place chances of spotting some wild life including herds of blue sheep’s, after a great enjoyable walk reaching at the junction of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, flowing from Tarap River beyond east, source of the river from the glacier of North West Dhaulagiri Himalayan range of mountains. After a pleasant walk reaching a summer pasture called Kamekharka, the word Kharka meaning shelter of the Sheppard’s

Day 20 : Trek to Kharigaon 3,150m – 05 hours.
After a nice morning in this wonderful area, trek leads towards Tarap River and into a gorge, rising above from the path built on steep slopes. This narrow gorge offers some challenge and with an adventure as the path in some places with damaged broken bridge by river floods, and sometimes wading across the chilly river on foot, after some adventure and excitement this fine day walk reaches at Tarap- khola near Kharigaon for overnight camping.

Day 21 : Trek to Tarakot 2,850m – 05 hrs.
Adventure carry’s on reaching the end of lower Dolpo area through Lalberi village and then back into tree lines on the trail following the river again downstream to Tarakot village. (over hundred years ago, before the Gorkha dynasty, this beautiful and interesting village was the capital and had Dzong meaning Fort). Tarakot village houses famous Sandul Gompa, located on the confluence of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chum after an interesting detour and visit of Tarakot village, walking down away from the village to overnight camp by the river and close to a monastery at the edge of a grassy plateau, with an interesting solitary tree.

Day 22 : Trek to Dunai 2,850 m and drive to Jhupal 2, 320m – 01 hr.
This wonderful journey slowly comes to an end at Jhupal, the gateway to Dolpo and many other destinations of far west region, starting final day walk to Dunai following several scattered farm villages and cattle herders shades and huts, then leading to a gradual uphill to a valley and descend to barren treeless landscapes at Thulo Bheri valley at Dunai area, from here walking past a hospital to cross a new suspension bridge to reach at Dunai town, a large town an administrative headquarter of Dolpo district. From here reach Jhupal on time taking a jeep ride for an hour drive on the dirt rough road to Jhupal for the last and final overnight stop of this impressive adventure.

Day 23 : Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel.
Morning as schedule short flight to Nepalgunj after a time here transfer to connecting flight back to Kathmandu after a wonderful and amazing time in the wild west of Nepal around Dolpo.

Day 24 : In Kathmandu free day with sightseeing tour.
Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition reserves this day as contingency in case of flight delay and cancellation at Jhupal which might occur sometime due to unfavorable bad weather conditions, if all goes as per the planned itinerary relax for individual activities or last day shopping souvenirs, or one can book for another interesting tour around Kathmandu-Bhaktapur and Patan.

Day 25 : International departure for home ward bound.
Last day in amazing Nepal as per international flight time NAT staff transfer you to airport for your flight back home or to next port of call, after a great and remarkable adventure to Upper Dolpo trekking with grand and wonderful service of Sherpa Royal Trek & Expedition guides and staff.
